How To Soften Leather ...
Is Your Leather Drying Out
And Losing It's Suppleness And Flexibility?
Here's how you can soften and moisturise leather ...
The technique I'm going to show you will work on any sort of leather ranging from, aniline to fully top-finished leathers. This will be particularly helpful in areas which are exposed to sunlight such as:
- Leather Car Upsholtery
- Leather Furniture
How Does Leather Lose It's Suppleness
In The First Place?
When leather is made in the tannery, special tanners oils are impregnated into the leather to maintain a certain percentage of moisture. Now, what happens is, once the leather has been made up into upholstery and exposed to heat and sunlight, this moisture level drops, reducing the flexibility of the leather, causing it to become firmer and less supple. In extreme cases, the leather becomes boardy and shrinks, causing the upholstery to tear along the stitching!
How Can This Be Prevented?
We've developed a leather softener containing the exact same oils used in new leather, so you can use it to soften your own leather, quickly and easily.
Yes, the Pelle Conditioner/Protector replenishes the lost moisture content but the leather softener is that multiplied! In other words, it's the original conditioner on STEROIDS! It is used in ADDITION to the Pelle Master Kit
The steps are very simple ...
- Thoroughly clean your leather with the Pelle Leather Cleaner
- Spray the Pelle Leather Softener onto the areas you would like to soften. Spread the Leather Softener evenly and leave for about 1 hour to soak into the leather.
- Repeat step 2, several times, then leave overnight to soak in.
- Lightly wipe off the residue with Pelle Leather Cleaner
- Apply the Pelle Condition/Protector
Here's a video showing you how it works ...
Not All Leather Softeners Are Created Equal!
Many people have asked me if they can use differently types of tanners oils to soften leather. The most important thing you need to be aware of is, many of these softeners are designed for leather which do NOT have a leather finish ... such as saddles and boots etc.
When using these softeners on upholstery leather which DOES have a leather finish, these products can etch into the finish, undo the binders which hold it all together and speed up the deterioration of your leather.
The Pelle Leather Softener is designed for leather which DOES have a leather finish. It will penetrate through the pores of the finish, into the substrate, without having any effect on the finish whatsoever!
Can Hard Leather Be Softened?
The Pelle Leather Softener will definitely improve the softness of hard, stiff and boardy leather but once the leather has got to that stage, it is very difficult to get it back to it's original softness again.
